Umag

On the west coast of Istria, just 10 km from the Slovenian border lies the town of Umag, with Savudrija the westernmost town in Croatia. Umag is a tourist town. Natural beauty and good geographical position were crucial for the development of tourism.

Near Umag there is a place Valica (Italian. Valizza) surrounded by nature and close to the beach Kanegre with the cleanest sea for bathing in Istria. There is a river Dragonja, and close by there is an international airport Sečovlje.

Peninsula with the historic center of Umag was once an island separated from the mainland. In the tenth century high defensive walls around the settlement were built, and the front gate was a drawbridge. In ancient times, the area around Umag was very densely populated. You can visit the city museum, which is located in the historic center of the medieval city tower area. There is an exhibition of archaeological objects from the Roman period (amphorae, oil lamps, Roman vessels), and for lovers of contemporary art a space is partly used as an exhibition space of contemporary artists.

Umag is also known for the variety of sports offered and numerous tennis courts and an ATP tournament which annually hosts a number of world famous players.

The development of tourism is directly related with the development of agriculture. Fertile soil is particularly suitable for the cultivation of olive trees and vines, traditional culture characteristic of the Mediterranean region. In the hinterland of Umag there are many vineyards and in the area Bujština a famous wine road with 22 well-known manufacturers of Istrian wines. Take a tour of the wine cellars and taste Istrian golden Malvasia or ruby red Teran and other world-famous wines that are grown in Istria, such as Pinot Noir, Muscat Refosco, Cabernet and Chardonnay sauvignon, or bring a bottle as a souvenir indigenous Istrian wine.

Agritourism, although industry still on the rise, attracting more and more tourists in search of unusual sights and locations.

The place where the longest Istrian river enters the sea is an impressive landscape that combines diverse flora and fauna of freshwater and marine life. View from Antenal located at the mouth of the river Mirna you will not soon forget.
